How to Care for a New Tattoo (the right way)

Getting tattooed is only the first step. Proper aftercare is what keeps your tattoo vibrant and healthy for years to come. At Copperhead Tattoos & Piercings in Austin, our artists provide every client with detailed tattoo aftercare instructions to help your skin heal beautifully and prevent infection.

If You’re Using Second Skin (Bandage Method)

Step-by-Step Aftercare:

  • Leave the second skin bandage on for 24 hours after your tattoo session.

  • When you remove it, gently wash the area with fragrance-free, antibacterial soap and warm water.

  • Pat dry with a clean, soft towel. Never rub or use anything abrasive.

  • Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free moisturizer such as Lubriderm, Aveeno, or Eucerin twice a day.

  • Avoid petroleum-based products, soaking in water, and scratching or picking the tattoo.

  • Keep the tattoo out of direct sunlight while healing.

If You’re Allergic to Second Skin (Plastic Wrap Method)

If your skin is sensitive or allergic to second skin adhesives, your artist will wrap your fresh tattoo in plastic film instead.

Follow these steps:

  • Leave the plastic film on for 2–4 hours, then carefully remove it.

  • Wash your tattoo under warm water with unscented soap such as Dr. Bronner’s Baby Unscented or Dove Sensitive Skin.

  • Let the area air dry. Do not rub.

  • Apply a very thin layer of Aquaphor Healing Ointment to keep it lightly moisturized.

  • Wash no more than twice daily and avoid sleeping on the tattoo or covering it tightly with clothing.

After 3–5 days, light flaking or peeling will begin — this is completely normal. As long as there’s no pus or foul odor, your tattoo is healing well. Once peeling ends, switch to an unscented lotion such as CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion or Aveeno Daily Moisture, and continue washing gently twice a day.

Things to Avoid During Tattoo Healing

To keep your new tattoo looking its best:

  • Don’t submerge it in pools, hot tubs, or the ocean for at least 2–3 weeks.

  • Avoid direct sun exposure until fully healed, then always apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ to protect your tattoo.

  • Don’t scratch, pick, or peel the tattooed skin.

  • Avoid tight clothing that can rub against the area.

Final Tips from Our Austin Tattoo Artists

Healing times vary for everyone, but on average, tattoos take 2–4 weeks to heal on the surface and up to three months to fully settle beneath the skin. Keeping your tattoo clean, moisturized, and protected is the key to preserving your new artwork.
