With more than 10 years in the tattoo industry, Erik brings a background rooted in graffiti and a style that combines realism and American traditional tattooing. But he doesn't like being boxed into one particular approach. Instead, he pulls techniques from different styles to create work that challenges him creatively.

We sat down with Erik to learn more about how he got started, what inspires his work, and what you can expect when you sit in his chair at Copperhead Tattoo and Piercing in Austin.

From Graffiti to Tattooing

Erik's path into tattooing started with graffiti. “My mentor did graffiti too,” he says. That connection eventually led him toward tattooing, giving him a creative foundation that still influences the way he approaches his work today.

Erik has now been tattooing for more than 10 years, giving him plenty of time to develop his own approach and learn what works for him as an artist.

One of the biggest lessons he took from his early years in the industry is pretty straightforward: “Do everything. If you're not sure, figure it out.”

That mindset says a lot about how Erik approaches tattooing. Rather than limiting himself to one way of doing things, he has spent years learning, experimenting, and finding ways to keep growing.

Realism, American Traditional, and Everything In Between

When it comes to his tattoo work, Erik specializes in realism and American traditional.

Those styles can have very different visual approaches, but that's part of what makes his work interesting. Erik doesn't see tattoo styles as strict boundaries. “I mix methods and techniques from all styles,” he explains.

He especially enjoys darker themes and tends to prefer tattooing arms and legs. His approach is less about sticking to a single formula and more about finding the right techniques for the piece in front of him.

Challenging Himself Through His Work

For Erik, inspiration isn't always about a particular artist, song, or outside influence. Sometimes, the challenge itself is the inspiration.

“I usually put together pieces based on how I want to be challenged.”

That technical focus gives him a reason to keep pushing himself. Each project can become an opportunity to try something different, combine techniques, or explore a new way of working.

And that ties directly into one of his favorite types of projects: hybrid pieces that combine two different styles.

Making Clients Feel Comfortable

For Erik, making clients comfortable starts with giving them room to communicate.

“I always make space for them to be clear about what they want.”

That applies whether someone walks in with a fully developed tattoo idea or just a general concept. Erik is comfortable working with either. When someone isn't quite sure what they want, he has a simple way of helping them narrow it down. He'll look at the tattoos they already have, then have them bring several references and explain what they like about each one. From there, he can start identifying the themes, styles, and visual elements that appeal to them.

Life Outside the Tattoo Shop

When Erik isn't tattooing, you'll probably find him doing one of two things: gaming or traveling.

And there's something else about him that might surprise people… “I'm actually talkative,” he says. So if you've ever assumed your tattoo artist is going to sit quietly behind their station for several hours, Erik might have a different experience waiting for you.

He also has another project keeping him busy these days. He's currently working on his truck to bring it back to its full glory. Proving that he has more than artistry in his hands.

A Tattoo Collection That's "Too Many to Count"

With more than a decade in the tattoo industry, it's probably not surprising that Erik has accumulated quite a few tattoos himself.

How many? “Too many to count,” he says.

When asked about his favorite, though, he has a very specific answer: the reticle on his face.

And despite having plenty of tattoos already, he doesn't currently have another one planned.

For now, at least.

His Advice for First-Time Clients

If you're nervous about getting your first tattoo, Erik has some simple advice: “It's best when you approach it like you're going to hang out with a friend.” That's a pretty good way to look at it.

You don't have to walk into a tattoo shop knowing everything. You don't need to have the perfect vocabulary to explain your idea. And you don't need to be an experienced tattoo collector.
